Jaume Plensa’s “We”: Illuminated!

We, Illuminated. Photo by Dan Fairchild.

Look at that!  Isn’t that seriously amazing?  I think that it is.

The sculpture by Spain’s Jaume Plensa entitled ‘We’ has resided at the top of Sunset Beach along Beach Avenue for a couple of months now.

And it has been glorious and awesome and mind-blowing and totally tripped out.

But… now it has been ILLUMINATED!

The freshly installed lights take this piece to a totally different level.  I’ll do a longer piece on this at some point very soon but I just had to get these pics up.

Great job – as usual – by photographer Dan Fairchild.

Joe Sola Is Making Art… In Yaletown for Vancouver Biennale

POSTED BY   |   January 7th, 2010

Joe Sola Is Making Art just outside the Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain Station.

Los Angeles-based New Media artist Joe Sola created this fluorescent light installation “Joe Sola is Making Art” which is both tongue-in-cheek, part wry humour and part serious social commentary.

The work places the artist in a box which chronicles his time making art.

The work, which could be called “switching art making on and off”, draws attention to the celebrity status, hungry for the limelight, forced self-promotion inherent in the contemporary art scene.

The piece makes visible the idea that making art is a job, which is to “make art” and that it is also a performance, with the artist being “on and off”.

Joe Sola is captivated by ideas of identity politics.  This work addresses the absurdity of celebrity status and how it influences contemporary culture.

Joe Sola’s recent works including a wide range of artistic contemporary mediums: video, performance, installation, as well as watercolour and drawings.

Joe Sola’ work has been exhibited internationally in Mexico, England, Switzerland, Spain and Cuba.

Mayor Gregor Robertson: Art Imitates Life. Photo by Kris Krug.

It was an early morning set-up at Morton Triangle for the Official Launch of the Vancouver Biennale 2009-2011.  We were lucky that the rain held off for as long as it did.  It almost looked like it might get sunny but alas during the speeches it started to rain a little bit.

KK Biennale Blog 07About 150 people came down to participate in the launch and during the speeches the entire park was filled by our yellow In-Transit-Ion umbrellas.

Many dignitaries were on-hand to show their support for the Biennale and public art in the cities of Vancouver and Richmond.

Mayor Gregor Robertson spoke on behalf of the City of Vancouver and Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie expressed how pleased and optimistic he is for his city to be a part of this exhibition.

This is the first time that The City of Richmond has been a part of the Biennale.  We are very proud to have already displayed Dennis Oppenheim’s Arriving Home at the International Arrivals Terminal at Vancouver International Airport.

The City of Richmond will soon have many more amazing pieces in their public parks and other locations including the forthcoming Wind Waves by Yvonne Domenge.

Sarah Blyth also spoke to the crowd on behalf of the Vancouver Parks Board.  Her speech was excellent and it’s good to have such strong and passionate support from our friends at City Hall.

Please enjoy these photos taken at the event.  From the masterful and very talented Kris Krug.

Intrepid Tourism BC Field Reporter Ivan Hughes took his video camera along with him during the recent BIKEnnale event this past Sunday and has created this cool video as a result.

As one of the riders interviewed for this video states, “A little exercise, a little culture… Vancouver’s a great bicycling city!”

Big thanks to MEC Great Rides for being such an enthusiastic partner for this awesome event.

Thanks and congratulations to all the riders, performers and support staff who helped make this BIKEnnale such a success.
